2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Reception
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a more defined direction.
The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the complete content from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to keep observing the evolution of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Head
Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Then, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that change every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or supported systems, but players can look forward to additional details as development progresses.
