Our Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Position.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to an arduous university quiz rather than a new popular music record by an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Divided into 4 distinct movements and performed in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic opus exploring female mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently by way of the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, supported by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a long roll call of collaborators. The pure ambition alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to escape overly intellectual posturing is nearly miraculous, and full credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to fuse the past and modern styles, the scale are far greater here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. What truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is a core sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she is tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stirring Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Then, all the music drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment before a comically exaggerated string surge crashes in like cartoonish impact. The song immediately shifts to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that you rarely exactly understand—nor want to know—what you is going to next."

Almost every song finishes in a completely distinct point from how it began. A track examines the transient nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style begins off dark and sinister, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act of Lux is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and broad accessibility. This is no coincidence that the album has achieved her first release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. That trick gets repeated on another powerful track that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of other breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its built-in excess. This is an abundant source of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day musical from music's most restlessly inventive visionary.
